Few beginning gardeners are up to the task of growing show-quality roses and other difficult flowers from the word go, so it makes sense (and boosts confidence) to start off with those species on the other end of the scale. If you’re poised to plant some flowers but don’t know a petal from a sepal, here are a few we recommend that you start off with.
- Black-Eyed Susans
- Cosmos
- Daylilies
- Four O’Clocks
- Impatiens
- Marigolds
- Moonflowers
- Pansies
- Portulaca (a.k.a. Purslane)
- Vincas
If you want to make your life even easier, plant your flowers in self-watering containers, so you never have to worry about how much to water. Incidentally: these flowers are also good for those of us with black thumbs, as they tend to be hard to kill.
