Amazon will be holding a press conference in New York next Wednesday, and it’s widely expected that the company will announce its long-rumored next-generation Kindles, and possibly even a full-fledged tablet computer.

When we met with Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos in May, he hinted at plans for multiple new products, including a color Kindle and a tablet:

Asked today about the possibility of Amazon launching a multipurpose tablet device, the company’s president and CEO Jeff Bezos said to stay tuned on the companys plans. In an interview at Consumer Reports’ offices, Bezos also signaled that any such device, should it come, is more likely to supplement than to supplant the Kindle, which he calls Amazons purpose-built e-reading device.

Since then, rumors about upcoming Amazon products have reached near Apple-like proportions, and in July, The Wall Street Journal cited “people familiar with the matter” as saying Amazon would release a tablet this fall.
