One of the foremost German automobile manufacturers, Volkswagen, has now stepped up its efforts in bringing the concept of autonomous driving into the mainstream road condition, as the company has now announced the introduction of the all new Temporary Auto Pilot (TAP) system. TAP will essentially enable the drivers to enjoy the freedom of semi-automatic cars that can drive themselves with driver monitoring at speeds in excess of 130 km/h. This incredible new system was designed and developed as part of EU initiative called, Highly Automated Vehicles for Intelligent Transport (HAVEit). The concept is largely based on the fact that autonomous cars will be required to be monitored by drivers and TAP takes benefit from existing automatic driving assisting technologies fused with semi-automatic functions.

TAP has been designed to keep certain critical elements of the car in check, such as the vehicle’s speed and can even automatically slow the car down before entering into bend. Furthermore, TAP also enables the drivers to stay in their lanes, by automatically adjusting the central position of the car with the lane markers. This marvelous system also allows the drivers to switch it on or off with the touch of a button, while keeping the car at a safe distance from other vehicles. TAP is composed of radar, camera, and ultrasonic sensors that are complimented by a laser scanner and an electronic horizon. The TAP system was unveiled by Prof. Dr. Jürgen Leohold, the head of Volkswagen Group Research.
